We are excited to share an in-depth Q&A with Interact Law member firm Shook, Hardy & Bacon’s Chair of Employment Litigation and Policy Practice, Bill Martucci, who takes us through some of the practice’s highlights. Bill, a proud and active member of Interact Law, also teaches global employment law at Georgetown and is the creator of a Apple/Spotify podcast series on wage and hour issues.

Who does the practice represent?

The practice exclusively represents corporate employers – including as national, convergence or preferred provider counsel for a number of Fortune 500 companies throughout the United States. The team focuses on providing practical solutions to tough questions and has over 75 lawyers.

Can you describe the current landscape relating to employment litigation in the U.S?

Employment litigation continues to be among the most prominent and challenging litigation in the American civil litigation arena. Corporate employers face increasing new wage and hour litigation, discrimination claims, and regulatory compliance lawsuits. Unquestionably, headline grabbing protests have sparked complaints across the United States regarding allegations of insufficient wages and missing overtime, and pattern and practice discrimination cases. In this context, corporate employers need effective, knowledgeable counsel.

Can you describe the firm’s approach to national employment litigation and policy?

The approach utilized by the group is practical and cost-effective. It focuses on creativity and fierce advocacy. In connection with the practice group approach, the focus is on early case evaluation, effective motion practice and favorable summary judgment outcomes, as well as jury trials.

The group is particularly well known for remarkable results in the courtroom and for the defense of wage and hour class actions around the country.

In addition to a focus on the courtroom, the practice is very comfortable in the alternative dispute context of mediation and arbitration, and more effectively resolving matters in a cost-efficient manner.

What are some of the Practice’s accolades and accomplishments?

The firm has been recognized in the National Law Journal’s “Defense Hot List” and by the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business also describes our practice as “A powerhouse. Truly one of the best firms in the nation.”
