As a valued member of the Interact Law network, Peck Advogados demonstrates how a strong commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be seamlessly integrated into a firm’s core mission. With a focus on Digital Law, the firm leads impactful initiatives that promote digital citizenship, ethical technology use, and inclusive access to legal education and support.

What inspired your company to prioritize CSR and how do you align these initiatives with your core business operations?

The inspiration to prioritize CSR is intrinsically linked to our mission and vision as a law firm specializing in Digital Law. We believe that technology, despite its numerous benefits, also presents challenges and risks that need to be addressed ethically and responsibly.

Our alignment between CSR initiatives and business operations occurs naturally, as:

  • Expertise in Digital Law: Our specialization allows us to offer knowledge and legal guidance to companies and individuals on the ethical, safe, and legal use of technology.
  • Peck Institute of Digital Citizenship: Our social arm, the Peck Institute of Digital Citizenship, materializes our commitment to CSR through projects and actions that promote education and awareness about rights and duties in the digital environment.
  • Pro bono work: Through the Institute, we dedicate part of our time and expertise to serve, on a non-profit basis, children, adolescents, families, and schools, contributing to ethical and responsible digital inclusion.

Can you share specific examples of impactful CSR projects that the company has carried out in recent years?

I highlight some highly impactful projects carried out by the Peck Institute of Digital Citizenship:

  • Safer Internet Family Movement: Through free lectures in schools across the country, we raise awareness among parents, students, and teachers about the risks and challenges of the internet, promoting the safe and responsible use of technology.
  • Digital inclusion projects: We develop projects in underprivileged communities, offering courses and workshops on the use of digital tools, empowering participants for the job market and the exercise of digital citizenship.
  • Action in cases of cyberbullying and cybercrimes: We offer legal and psychological support to victims of cybercrimes, seeking justice and reparation for the damages suffered.
  • Production of educational content: We create informative and educational materials and guides on relevant topics of Digital Citizenship, such as data protection, cell phone use in schools, use of artificial intelligence in schools, cyberbullying, cybersecurity, and responsible use of social media, making them available free of charge to society.

How does your company measure the success and sustainability of its CSR initiatives?

We measure the success and sustainability of our CSR initiatives through:

  • Social impact indicators: We assess the reach and impact of our projects through metrics such as the number of people benefited, the increase in knowledge and awareness about the topics addressed, and the improvement in the quality of life of the participants.
  • Strategic partnerships: We seek partnerships with other organizations and institutions that share our values and objectives, expanding the reach and impact of our actions.
  • Transparency and accountability: We disclose our results and activities transparently, seeking the trust and support of society.

We believe that CSR is a continuous commitment and that we must constantly seek to improve our practices and expand our social impact.

What types of pro bono cases does your company typically handle and how do you select the cases or clients you work with?

Our pro bono work focuses on areas that align with our expertise in Digital Law and the values of our pro bono clients:

  • Peck Institute of Digital Citizenship (IPCD):
  • We provide legal consulting for education and awareness projects on the ethical, safe, and legal use of technology.
  • We work on the development of educational and informative materials on topics such as data protection, cybersecurity, and responsible use of social media.
  • Norberto Bobbio Institute (INB):
  • We collaborate on projects related to the promotion of democracy, human rights, and digital citizenship.

The selection of cases or clients we work with is based on the following criteria:

  • Alignment with our values and expertise: We prioritize cases that relate to Digital Law and allow us to use our specialized knowledge.
  • Social impact: We seek projects that can generate a positive impact on society, promoting social justice and digital citizenship.
  • Sustainability: We assess the feasibility and sustainability of the projects, seeking long-term partnerships with committed organizations.

Can you share a notable success story?

A notable example is our ongoing work with the Peck Institute of Digital Citizenship in the “Safer Internet Family Movement.” Through this project, we have delivered hundreds of free lectures in schools across the country, impacting thousands of students, parents, and teachers. This work has contributed to raising awareness about the risks and challenges of the internet, promoting the safe and responsible use of technology.

How do you encourage and support your lawyers and staff to participate in pro bono activities?

We encourage and support our team to participate in pro bono activities through:

  • Recognition and appreciation: We recognize and appreciate the pro bono work of our lawyers, highlighting their contribution to society.
  • Flexibility and autonomy: We offer flexibility and autonomy for our lawyers to dedicate part of their time to pro bono projects.
  • Training and development: We offer professional training and development opportunities in areas related to Digital Law and digital citizenship.
  • Culture of social responsibility: We promote a culture of social responsibility within the firm, encouraging participation in pro bono activities as an integral part of our professional practice.

Do you collaborate with other organizations, NGOs, or government agencies to expand the impact of your pro bono work?

Yes, we collaborate with government agencies to expand the impact of our pro bono work, such as technical work at CnCyber and CNJ, aiming to support the construction of a solid legal framework for the country.

How do you plan to expand or innovate your CSR and pro bono efforts in the coming years?

We plan to expand and innovate our CSR and pro bono efforts in the following ways:

  • Expansion of IPCD’s activities:
  • Expand the reach of our education and awareness projects on digital citizenship, using new technologies and online platforms.
  • Develop training programs for teachers and educators on the responsible use of AI in education, in line with PL 2338/2023.
  • Increase awareness about the prohibition of the use of electronic resources.
  • Expand advocacy work on topics related to the use of technology in education.
  • Strengthening the partnership with INB:
  • Support INB in research and advocacy projects related to democracy and human rights in the digital environment.
  • Promote debates and events on the challenges of digital democracy and the importance of citizen participation online.

Is there a specific social challenge in Brazil that your firm hopes to address more broadly through CSR or pro bono work?

Yes, one of the specific social challenges we hope to address more broadly is digital exclusion and the lack of access to quality information and education in the digital environment, especially regarding the ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

We believe that technology, including AI, can be a powerful tool for social transformation, but it is essential to ensure that everyone has equal access to its benefits and that the risks are mitigated.

We believe that by addressing these challenges, we can contribute to building a fairer, more inclusive, and democratic society in the digital environment, where AI is used for the common good.
